special film screening: dolores

Dolores Huerta is among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century—and she continues the fight to this day, at 87. With intimate and unprecedented access to this intensely private mother to eleven, the film reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change.

galleria reception "everything in between" by nancy szarkowski

About the Artist
Nancy Szarkowski is a DC-based visual artist. Although she can’t exactly pinpoint when it all started, she has formally and informally explored many forms of art over the years—from drawing and ceramics to photography and painting. After graduating from Syracuse University in 2011 with a degree in graphic design, Nancy has grown professionally as an interactive designer while pursuing art in her spare time. Painting is her favorite form of expressing ideas. She has displayed her work in various shows and competitions in the past, and this is her first solo exhibit.

About the Exhibit
As humans we experience many ups and downs throughout life, some fleeting and some that persist over time. “Everything in Between” explores the complexity of feeling in our daily lives and the need to express emotions we can't define with words. The pieces in this exhibit are Nancy's way of capturing those moments. Inspired by her travels, personal experiences, and observations of others, she has visually explored a diverse spectrum of emotions from pain and sorrow to tranquility and hope.

To commemorate the loss of the whiskey ration, come by the Museum for your free Cup of Coffee, and raise it in salute to the sailors of the Battle of Mobile Bay.
